Discipleship by Keith Nester

"It's not enough to know about Him you have to know Him. We should have that abiding relationship with Jesus."

Marks of Inauthentic Disciples
1. HEAD KNOWLEDGE DISCIPLE
*Center their experience on knowing the right ideas but their hearts are not transformed by them
- fired upon expressing theological things but having a bad habits
- "Do you know that... I'm right... you're wrong" attitude
- Mr. Know it all
- Knowing the right theology does not automatically make you an authentic disciple because you know who knows more theology than you do? the Devil
- Head-knowledge
- The job of the disciple is not to learn stuff but to follow Jesus
- Knowledge puffs up but love builds up
- If you care more about being right than being holy or loving then you are not the real deal when it comes to discipleship
2. EXTERNAL DISCIPLE
*Emphasize visible behaviors but often neglect the invisible attitudes and motivations
- Focused on external things but inside they were full of horrible things (pride, lust, anger, hypocrisy, self-indulgent)
- They view what's good for others
- Having a sense of accomplishment (prayers, novena, rituals)when we do stuff but did not connect to the heart
3. INDULGENT DISCIPLE
*Make few sacrifices and deny themselves little
- Do little things required when it comes to unseen personal sacrifice
- Impressing the crowd rather than God
- Be careful not to do your acts of righteousness before others
- They are worried about what other people think, it should be what God thinks
- Integrity is what you do when no one is looking
4. FEELINGS OVER TRUTH DISCIPLE
*Value feelings over Truth
- Bending the rules to suit their desires
- We believe God exists for our purposes. It should be the other way around
5. HALF DISCIPLE
*They draw bold lines around their obedience to Jesus
- They will obey the teachings as long as they don't conflict with their own perceived ideas and what they're comfortable with, there's is no total consecration or surrender to God
- 50/50 relationship
- There are some things I'm gonna do for God and something I'm just not gonna do for God
- If your plan for your life is achievable without God then that means it's not God's plan
- "I'm not going that far" but what if God said I want more

Marks of Authentic Disciples
1. PERSONAL JESUS DISCIPLE
*Center their experience on knowing Jesus personally
- There's nothing more personal than receiving Jesus Christ in the Eucharist, there's nothing more personal than hearing the words of the priest and in the confessional
- Jesus wants to be personal for you
- Personal, not private
- It's about you and Jesus
2. INTERIOR DISCIPLE
*Focusses on the interior life as the means for transforming their whole life
- The pathway to the fruit is through the root
- Amid the suffering reveals the real attitude of a disciple
- True disciples work on what's going on in the heart because when we are bumped what spills out is grace and holiness
- True disciples spend more time on the interior life
- Jesus loves hidden souls, a hidden flower is the most fragrant. I must strive to make the interior soul a resting place for the heart of Jesus.
- Working out the interior than the exterior
3. SELF DENIAL DISCIPLE
*They are always seeking to increase their sacrifice and devotions
- No limitations until they end up on a cross
- They figure out how they can serve more, they can give more, pray more, and Never stops
- The more you become closer to Jesus, the more you realize how much of His grace you need
- The closer you get to God the more you realize you need Him
4. TRUTH OVERALL DISCIPLE
*Value the Truth even at the expense of their feelings
- Their feelings are not the driving force of their life, the truth is
- Forsake their preferences for the sake of obedience to God
5. SURRENDERED DISCIPLE
*They remove all conditions to obedience
- Letting God work in your life
