Certainty of Hopeful Eternity
Seeing the faces of the street dwellers and hearing Nanay Ermi’s sorrowful news that eight of their dogs, along with some of her companions, had been taken by the police left a deep impression on me. It made me wonder what truly rests in their hearts: the fears they carry, the burdens they endure, and the uncertainty of a tomorrow that is never guaranteed. To live without assurance of what comes next is already a difficult struggle marked by suffering.
We often find ourselves standing between two worlds in a single glance of eternity, between joy and sorrow, hope and uncertainty. There are moments in life that reason alone cannot fully understand, and only the heart can truly grasp their depth. Amid the many experiences we encounter, meaning slowly unfolds through the struggles and silent longings of people. In this way, our lives become visible signs of our capacity to endure.
Yet amid such uncertainty, Christ’s Ascension offers a different perspective, one that breathes hope into lives that often seem directionless. As Jesus raised His eyes to heaven and fulfilled the mission entrusted to Him, He revealed the deeper meaning of eternal life: “that they should know You, the only true God, and the one whom You sent, Jesus Christ.” In a world filled with confusion and instability, this promise becomes a source of hope that reminds us that true fulfillment is found not merely in earthly security but in communion with God.
Christ’s prayer for His disciples reminds us that no one is forgotten in the eyes of God. Even amid suffering, poverty, uncertainty, every person remains deeply loved and entrusted to His care. Jesus knew the struggles His followers would face in the world, yet instead of abandoning them, He prayed for them and entrusted them to the Father. Likewise, Christ’s Ascension assures us that we are never alone in our own trials and uncertainties.
The Ascension invites us to see life differently, not to ignore suffering, but to behold it through the lens of hope. The struggles of the poor, the fear of tomorrow, and the hidden pain within human hearts are not signs of abandonment, but places where grace can quietly dwell. In these difficult times, Christ reminds us that beyond sorrow, political and societal uncertainty lies the enduring promise of eternal life, a hope offered to all who seek Him.
